Shannon Lassere, 58, was found dead on Jan. 27 and Marianne Weis, 52, was found dead on Feb. 1, both near a strip mall in Indianapolis, Ind., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) confirms to PEOPLE.
The circumstances of the killings have a “number of commonalities,” IMPD said in astatementon Friday.
The victims were both White women in their 50’s who were “killed in the same manner,” said the statement. While the statement doesn’t specify how the women were killed, Lassere’s son, Justin Smith,told WTHRshe was stabbed to death.
The two killings took place within a three-minute walk from each other, per the addresses provided in the statement. The area has some residences across from the small strip mall.
It’s unclear whether the killing took place that morning or earlier.

It isn’t clear whether the women knew each other or if there is a person of interest in the killings. On Monday, IMPD declined to comment on these questions and told PEOPLE there are no further updates to share.
Family members and the local community remain concerned.
Donna Spears, a resident in the area,told WTHRthat she is scared about the situation and is considering not walking as much as she normally does.
“The age kind of looks similar. It’s just too coincidental,” Spears told the outlet.“I feel like there is somebody out here doing something,” Smith, Lassere’s son, told FOX 59. “It’s not a coincidence. Something’s wrong.”
