British astronaut Major Tim Peake spent six months aboard the International Space Station ( ISS ) . He gained celebrity on societal media for his science communication , astrophotography skills , and all labialize niceness .
He did not , however , go to the Moon . The last mortal who stepped foot on our pale shielder was Eugene Cernan in 1972 . Both of these facts seemed to get away a TV presenter in the UK , who ask Peake if he ’d taken a sample back from the lunar surface during his clock time out from Earth .
The exchange took property on ITV’sThis Morningbreakfast show , between the calm and collected astronaut and one Amanda Holden :
Holden : “ I do n’t know whether you would be allowed to answer it really , as it might be a spicy thing . When you went to the Moon did you take a piece of the Moon and bring it back home with you ? ”
Peake : “ So I was n’t on the moon , I was on the space place . ”
Holden : “ So you never fuck off off , there was nothing floating about that you could slip ? ”
Peake : “ No but there was a brilliant interrogation from a young lad who said ‘ did you bring back any token from the Space Station ? ' I thought what a marvelous thought if we go there and get something back . ”
The Moon is 961 times further forth from the Earth ’s surface than the ISS . Unless there ’s a mysterious Narnia - like gateway to the Moon up there , then there ’s plain no way the Major could have take hold of a lunar sample .
We ’d love to share the original cartridge clip of said exchange happening , but the rendering of the interview upload to YouTube by the idiot box TV channel in question bump off allege incident . Fortunately , people on the net were more than well-chosen to register this glorious moment and recite the humanity of this rather gigglesome blunder .
Despite this galactic error , credit must be given to the interviewee , who handled what must have been peak overplus with characteristic good will .
It could have been spoiled . Back in 2014 , the UK ’s Channel 4 ran a program calledLive From Space , which grant people on Twitter the opportunity to have a question answer by an ISS crewmember – a once in a life opportunity for most . Here are justsomeof the question :
“ Do you leave out pizza ? "
“ How do you do an anti - gravity poo ? ”
“ What happens if someone farts on the ISS ? ”
“ What if you ’re on your space walk and you drop off your place keys ? ”
“ Can you see me waving from my theater ? ”
“ What does it finger like to do a poo in space ? ”
“ How does the window cleanser get up there ? ”
“ Where does all the poo go ? Please tell me there ’s a pooship . ”
Asking the big questions , clearly .
