CeBIT 2006: State of the Union

Clarence Day Two here at CeBIT in Hannover and we can safely say that we ’ve trundle past all the large announcements . This is a vast show , but all of the actual announcements seem to happen at U.S. and Asian shows unfortunately . But if you find what those announcements were — Origami , improvements in flash drives , scads of PMPs and Tuners — there ’s a clear tendency . This is a design show . It ’s not about technology any longer .

It feels like we ’re at an turn point or , if you want to be all Gladwell about it , a tipping point . This industriousness has gone from velocity and feed to “ Gee , it ’s purdy ” in about 6 years and we ’re about to turn another street corner and talking about performance again because the foundation - through - swap - dress route is in risk of imploding on itself . As we all jazz , Asia is making some incredible hooey that we ’ll never see . It face great and is very cheap . But thus far we ’ve seen few technological procession here except size reduction , which is an inevitable process .

So what am I aver ? I ’m sound out that the poppycock we see this class will get very smart next year and in the next five years . It will become more “ all - in - one ” in a secure way , with WAN , WiFi , Wireless USB , and other connectivity systems creating a unlined environment for our gear . The eroticism of the iPod will give way to the power of some cool PC / medium player that will amaze us . Because we know how to make pretty car and interfaces , we can cover lots of the backend stuff from the user in shipway that we have thus far only dreamed of . Take Origami , for deterrent example . It is no succeeder , but it is no Microsoft Bob , either . Tools like Origami and Frontrow and eventhe open - source Mac media organization called CenterStagewill put up us a simple interface to complex system .

Sure it ’s simplistic , but it ’s where we need to be in monastic order to test to the wider world that engineering is n’t just for the wise and rich . It ’s for everyone , now , it ’s its all eminently usable .
