The upcoming DreamWorks animated movie Home features Jim Parsons as a crazy dancing unknown . But it also has some completely bonkers visuals of an offbeat alien encroachment of the Earth . This film let a ton of expectant artists go nut with spaceships and floating building . See for yourself , with some exclusive concept art from the motion picture .

This graphics comes via a novel rule book , The Art of Home , which has lots of insights into how DreamWorks manage to bend Adam Rex ’s book of account The True significance of Smekday into a handsome animated moving-picture show , including the blueprint process of creating the foreign Boov and evoke the paradigm of an Earth that ’s been transformed by the Boov ’s presence . And some wacky cosmic visuals read the Boovs ’ global house of cards ships flying through a weird rainbow distance .

One of my favorite illustrations in the book shows the UI of the Boov spaceship , thoroughgoing with odd schematics and alien playscript . It unquestionably shows how much thought snuff it into creating a neat - look alien culture that ’s not 100 percent like what we ’ve seen before .

Here are some more art spread and excerpts from The Art of Home :

“ The motion-picture show gave us the chance to really explore the possible action of the 3 - five hundred engineering . We have some great set that help us draw the witness into the rich 3 - five hundred environments . There is some lush foliage , standardised to Avatar ’s Na’vi planet . We scud through trees and some arresting foreground elements , which add together to creating a racy , animated experience . There ’s also this remarkable crash landing in China — one of our artistsbuilt an amazing cathedral out of bamboo , which leads to the Gorg , which is pretty unbelievable . “ I think what take this film tolerate out is the very original tone . It ’s a pal , friendly relationship tale , but it ’s also a science fiction movie to a large extent . It ’s also a great comedy . One thing that makes our pic at DreamWorks really especial is the fact that they ’re all different from each other . Each fourth dimension we research an entirely Modern ideate world . There ’s nothing established about them . ” — Mike Trull , Head of Final Layout

“ I mean the most unique challenge in this movie was working on the Gravity Balls . We have huge float parcel of mundane items like motorcar and umbrella meander through the sky in scenes . We have lit umbrellas and cars before in other movies , but when there are one C of them nonplus together floating around in a giant clump , the look can be dramatically different . ”—Betsy Nofsinger , Head of Lighting

“ In terms of stylistic goal , we want to hit the sweet spot of having enough realistic element while keeping the lovable simplicity of our character designer ’s work . His physique and geometry are so graceful and endearing . We needed to complement his work in terms of texture and cloth . Our director Tim Johnson did n’t desire the pic to bet excessively photographic and pushed it to have a water-colour - y feel . The Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , the buildings , even the grime on the airfoil of the building — everything had to feel constituent and traditional . We had a delicate job of balancing between the real and the painterly . ”—Jeremy Engleman , Head of Surfacing
