In the interview, Clark told Chris Cuomo that Cavalcante, the 34-year-old convicted murderer who escaped from Chester County Prison, was “brutally honest” during the interrogation, which took place with the help of a Brazilian interpreter.

According to Clark, Cavalcante would drink creek water, and seek cover in “thick, thick thickets," meaning officers would have to step on him to find him. Cavalcante reportedly told Clark that law enforcement officers came very close to doing so on three occasions: “They were about seven to eight yards away from him,” Clark said.

Cavalcante also changed his appearance, shaving his beard with a razor he stole, which he carried in his backpack.

He relied on his “spidey senses” to evade authorities throughout the manhunt, Clark said.

On Wednesday morning, the team tasked with finding Cavalcante finally cornered him. First, shortly after midnight, a burglary alarm sounded within the area law enforcement was searching, which allowed them to narrow their search, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said at a press conference.

An overheard aircraft then identified a “heat source” on the ground. A storm forced officials to temporarily remove the aircraft from the sky, but with the area secured, the aircraft picked up the heat source later and Cavalcante was surrounded at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

Once he realized he had been cornered, Cavalcante tried to crawl through a bush, taking a rifle he had previously stolen with him. However, law enforcement had a dog that “subdued” him, Bivens said, later adding that Cavalcante suffered a minor bite injury.
