It has long been established that Anakin Skywalker , like many in his lineage , has aflair for the dramatic . He is ahaunted soul , aspecter of fear , atragic and vengefulfigure . But he is also perhaps the Star Wars galaxy’sbiggest , pettiest grudgeholder .
This week ’s Star Wars # 6 — written by Charles Soule , and featuring art by Jesús Saiz , Arif Prianto , and Rochelle Rosenberg , and lettering by Clayton Cowles — see Luke Skywalker continue his quest to rightfully become a Jedi . This comesafter permit goose the Skywalker sabre he lose on Bespin to look into a vision of a young lightsaber . It ’s a quest that leads him to a temple from the High Republic era on the major planet Tempes , where Luke confront a trial with a particularly familiar face …

This is not some Christ’s Resurrection for Star Wars Rebels ’ initial scoundrel — the flames consuming his intact body are the fire he plunged into aboard the Sovereign in the enliven series’first season finale . Nor is it a Cave - of - Evil - esque whoremaster played on Luke ’s psyche , the stiff Force energies of the Tempes temple preying on the footle doubts in his mind about his father ’s bequest . Because this Grand Inquisitor does n’t just have sex his past as an fire extinguisher of surviving Jedi , he is keenly aware that he give out in life and retain to serve someone else in death .

That someone is , well , technically his boss . It turns out , through some kind of Sith thaumaturgy — perhaps standardized to those that adhere the ancient Sith Lord Momin to his mask in last , as explored inSoule ’s incredible runon the previous volume of Darth Vader with Giuseppe Camuncoli — Vader hasbound the very spiritof the Grand Inquisitor to a Jedi Temple , both as a guard and also , fundamentally , an incredibly haunting warning signal bell . The moment the Inquisitor ’s spirit leaps out at Luke , Vader senses a disturbance that the ambuscade he ’s laid has spring , and makes his means there to see what flies are overhear in it .

By the time he arrives — unaware that it was the Word that had justdenied their lineagein Cloud City — Luke has not only get off with a new ( actually very ancient ) lightsaber to exert , but the spirit of the Grand Inquisitor has been defeated . His 2nd death is not the ending , however , and … yeah , it ’s about as alarm as it would seem . Vader has been torturing this soul — this literally still - dying shade of a former Jedi turned dark side acolyte — for almost a ten at this head , bound to live , pass , live again , expire again at Tempes as nothing more than a glorify spiritual claxon .
And even when that spirit begs for release into the Force , Vader denies it . Vader was basically the true head ofthe Imperial Inquisitorius , but we ’ve long known his disdain for both them and , ultimately , the technologically enhanced replacements Palpatine hadcreated behind his back . They were usurpers to his position at the Emperor ’s Hand , a incessant reminderof just how much his master hates that rather of Anakin Skywalker , the almighty Chosen One , he instead get Vader , more machine than humans .
Vader never draw a blank . And he never forgives . The Grand Inquisitor ponders , as his chained soul returns to serve , that it ’s perhaps a luck even tough than last at a Dark Lord of the Sith ’s hand .
