The 2003 Haunted Mansion movie stands out as passably bad , even in a ocean of middling Disney motif park ride motion-picture show — that peculiarly specific , yet well - populated literary genre . But one of the creator behind Kubo and the Two Strings vend a jolly awesome - sounding reboot of the idea , that would ’ve grant it an animated twist .
Shannon Tindle , the character designer and author who ’s sour on everything from Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends to Laika ’s animated epic Kubo and the Two Strings , shared a rake animation for a toon reboot of Haunted Mansion over the weekend — feature designs from Tindle himself , as well as animation from Matt Williames , backgrounds by Sunmin Inn , gesture graphics from Daniel Hashimoto , and character coloration styling from Rachelle Reyes .

Sadly , the serial publication never endure beyond the initial auction pitch and Tindle has pulled the tormenter — featuring Black - ish ’s Marsai Martin as a young girl exploring the house painting of the nominal star sign — to avoidany potential difficulty with Disney . But the architect did reveal a few more details toCartoon Brewabout what he would ’ve design to do with the serial publication had it really been pick up by Disney :
My destination was to take inspiration from all the backstories created by the artist at WED [ the name of Disney ’s Imagineering division ] and stitch it into one , giant narrative . The tarradiddle would cross several years and rivet on different lineament , but add up to one big , interconnected news report .
Honestly , video serial , peculiarly animated ones , seem like the best avenue for Disney ’s weird and occasionally magic desire to turn its park rides into alternate forms of media . It ’s sad that Tindle ’s Haunted Mansion never got off the basis , but hopefully there ’s a future in Disney animation for more pitch like this , that actually make it to our screen .
