What causes thunderstorm ? Previous inquiry show that one campaign is cosmic rays from place , generated by supernovas . But a Modern paper shows that something much nearer and muscular is also responsible : solar air current from our own Sun .
First , a quick flat coat on what the solar wind is . It ’s a continuous stream of particles from the Sun , and it tends to pick up when the Sun emits solar solar flare . These flares are more frequent when sunspots are in slap-up routine on the headliner ’s control surface , which find when the Sun ’s magnetic activity increase . “ Our master result , ” said lead author Chris Scott ( of the University of Reading ) in a command , “ is that we have found evidence that in high spirits - speed solar wind streams can increase lightning rates . The researchers discovered “ a substantial and significant increment in lightning pace ” for up to 40 days after solar winds hit Earth ’s atmosphere . The reasons behind this are still poorly understood , but the researchers say this could be because the atmosphere ’s electrical charge change as the particles ( which are themselves electrically charged ) bump off the atmosphere .
If this is show , this could give a new refinement to brave predictor who could incorporate entropy about solar wind streams that are being watched by spacecraft . This stream of particles would change with the sun ’s 27 - day gyration , and researchers desire this could improve foresightful - reach forecasts .
The study is based on UK Met Office lightning tap information in the United Kingdom between 2000 and 2005 , more specifically anything that happened within 500 kilometers ( 310 miles ) of primal England . They also used information from NASA ’s Advanced Composition Explorer ( ACE ) , a spacecraft that examine the solar current of air .
After each event , the research worker uncovered an average of 422 lightning ten-strike in the United Kingdom in the next 40 twenty-four hour period , compared to an average of 321 lightning strikes in between these events . ( The peak was about 12 to 18 days after an event . )
The researchers pointed out that the charismatic field of Earth does avert many of these molecule , but in the cases observed the particle would have been energetic enough to move into “ cloud - forming neighborhood ” of the Earth ’s air .
“ We propose that these particles , while not having sufficient energies to reach the solid ground and be detected there , nevertheless wire the atmosphere as they clash with it , altering the electric properties of the air and thus influence the pace or intensity at which lightning occurs , ” Scott stated .
