Elon Musk   has made no secret of his desire for humans to become an interplanetary species . And he ’s reiterated that desire after a subject field suggested there ’s a decent luck we ’re alone in the population .

Last hebdomad a newspaper publisher come up out that suggested there is between a39 and 85 percent chancewe are alone in the discernible universe . research worker amount to this ending by looking at various scientific uncertainties in the Drake Equation , which attempts to predict the number of intelligent civilization out there .

And in a couple of tweets , Musk suggested the study highlighted our indigence to leave Earth and overspread life where we can , as first cover byBusiness Insider .

“ This is why we must preserve the light of consciousness by becoming a spacefaring culture & extending biography to other planets , ” he said .

“ It is unidentified whether we are the only civilization presently alive in the observable universe , but any chance that we are is added impetus for extending life beyond Earth . ”

Musk , of course of action , hasstated this   before . His fellowship SpaceX is currently building ahuge young rocket , called the Big Falcon Rocket ( BFR ) , with the goal of coiffure up a human colony on Mars . Musk wants a million - strong colony by the end of the century .

If we are truly alone in the macrocosm , then one could argue there ’s a greater pauperism to preserve life on Earth , be that on the planet itself or elsewhere . Plenty of expert have argued that humanity needs to impart Earth , including the previous Stephen Hawking .

“ We are run out of space , and the only blank space we can go to are other worlds , ”   he say at the Starmus festival in Norway in 2017 , notedInverse . “ It is time to explore other solar systems . Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves . I am confident that humans involve to leave behind Earth . ”

It ’s not all regretful news though . Anders Sandberg , the lead author on the chance of life-time report , toldNew Scientistthat scientist are still quite affirmative there   is life out there . We still ca n’t answer the Fermi Paradox , which asks why we ca n’t see any life if it ’s so abundant , but the odds are n’t completely against us .

“ If you want to argue there is sure enough levelheaded lifetime , you need to argue some of these parameters are in a narrow reach , which is a bold claim , ” he said . “ But claim that we are alone also takes a sheer title , as you have to cut off affirmative part[s ] of that range . ”

But while the panel might be out on the chance of alien life , Musk seems pretty inexorable . for survive or thrive , we need to get going explore other worlds . Better get to it , then .
