Even if you ’re careful about opt how and where your email is sent , chance are you respond to plenty of substance sent from Gmail . And , as it turns out , that probably means that Google has most of your email , whether you like it or not .
Benjamin Mako Hill — who die hard his own email server — decided to work out how much of his email Google has access to . The results are surprising :
Despite the fact that I pass hundreds of dollars a class and hours of work to host my own electronic mail host , Google has about one-half of my personal e-mail ! Last year , Google delivered 57 % of the electronic mail in my inbox that I replied to . They have have more than a third of all the email I ’ve replied to every year since 2006 and more than one-half since 2010 . On the upside , there is some indication that the proportion is going down . So far this year , only 51 % of the email I ’ve respond to arrived from Google .

In other words , even if you do n’t apply Gmail — or even go so far as tend your own e-mail host — Google has most of your email . deal that Microsoft , Yahoo and other belike make up a prominent part of the remainder , and you recognize that your email is for the most part in the hands of tech companies — not just you .
