“I think anybody could do a wonderful job with the role,” Bailey told PEOPLE when asked about the English singer joining her. “I’m so blessed to be a part of such a beautiful project.”
The role of Prince Eric would have been Styles’ second major acting gig.
His only role came in 2017’sDunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s epic WWII thriller. The performer had a bulk of the lines in the otherwise dialogue-light film, which also starred Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, and Fionn Whitehead.
He alsorecently screen-tested for the role of Elvis Presleyin Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic, but the singer lost out on the role to Austin Butler.
Besides acting, Styles was famously part of One Direction before the boy band went on hiatus in early 2016. He then embarked on a successful solo career.

Fans and stars were also quick to rally behind the choice, including Jodie Benson — the original voice of Ariel in the 1989 animated classic — whoargued at Florida Superconin July that “the most important thing is to tell the story.”
