For Bouffard, telling his parents was one of the most exciting steps of the couple’s journey to parenthood.

“I was so excited to tell my parents. This will be their first grandchild so I couldn’t wait to share the news with them,” he says. “They knew we were on the fence about having kids, so this was definitely a happy surprise for them.”

The mom-to-be notes that the two weren’t initially sure that they wanted to grow their family.

“Some people know they want to become parents, but for us, we weren’t sure. We kept going back and forth, trying to decide what would be the best decision for us,” Madison tells PEOPLE. “It wasn’t until we started thinking about our future outside of our careers that we realized this was something we wanted. I don’t think we ever would have felt ‘ready,’ but it’s a new chapter we’re so excited to open together.”

“We knew we were ready when we talked about becoming parents every day,” Bouffard adds. “It became part of our regular conversation, and the timing finally felt right. I’m excited to have a mini ‘us’ enter the world. Half of me, half of her. But hopefully, it’s 100% her personality.”

As they get closer to welcoming their new addition, Madison says she’s excited to see how Bouffard settles into becoming a dad.

“Jon has a tough exterior, but he’s a real softy on the inside,” she says. “He has such a caring and nurturing soul — I can’t wait to see him become a father. He’s going to be amazing.”

“I hope our dog doesn’t get too jealous that he won’t be an only child anymore,” Madison jokes. “We’re officially handing in our resignation letters as DINKS! (Dual Income No Kids).”
